Recovery objectives: RTO, RPO and other time-based targets

Recovery objectives turn continuity needs into measurable planning targets, but they must be defined consistently and tied to business outcomes.

RTO

Recovery Time Objective is a target for restoring an activity or resource after disruption. Different organizations may define the start and end points differently, so the definition belongs beside the number.

RPO

Recovery Point Objective is commonly used for data and describes the maximum targeted period of data that may need to be recreated after recovery.

Business need versus technical capability

A desired two-hour recovery does not mean the current system can achieve it. The gap between need and tested capability becomes a planning issue.

Targets should connect

Application, supplier, facility and team targets should support the activity-level requirement rather than being invented independently.

Business continuity is organization-specific. Recovery priorities, legal duties, safety requirements, contracts, insurance terms and technical recovery methods should be validated by the responsible people in the organization.
