Alternate sites and workspace continuity

Alternate workspace can range from another office to distributed remote work, depending on the activities and equipment that need to continue.

Requirements first

Seats alone are not enough; power, network, privacy, specialized equipment and proximity to staff may matter.

Activation time

A site that takes several days to prepare cannot support a four-hour recovery objective.

Shared disaster risk

An alternate location should not depend on exactly the same local utilities, transport routes or access constraints when geographic separation is the purpose.

Maintenance

Access rights, equipment and contact information should be periodically checked.

Business continuity is organization-specific. Recovery priorities, legal duties, safety requirements, contracts, insurance terms and technical recovery methods should be validated by the responsible people in the organization.
